Staurolite gets its name from the Greek words stauros-lithos which can be translated as cross stone. It is also known as a fairy cross. The stone almost always has a formation of a cross upon it. The reason for the cross formation on this gemstone is from a process called crystal twinning.
These stones has been seen for a long time as stones of protection and good luck. In ancient times it was given to children to ward off evil. Christians believed that this stone was the connection between Heaven and Earth.
