Green Glazed Incense Burner // Han Dynasty
A wonderful Han dynasty (206 BC-200 AD) incense burner. The circular body set upon three bear shaped legs and is covered in heavy leaded green glaze. The body is shaped with bands of incised rings. The glaze has degraded from centuries of burial, and now exhibits a wonderful shimmering, silvery patina.
This incense burner represents a mythical mountain where immortals roam. Such objects in the form of a mountain may have symbolized the entrance to the supernatural world, which the Han Chinese believed could be accessed from the highest mountain tops.
